The History of the Franklin Cemetery
The Franklin Cemetery is located on land given for the purpose in 1849, by George W. Nesmith and Ebenezer Morrison, and land since purchased of the said Morrison in 1866, of Asa B. Closson in 1873, of Warren F. Daniell in 1883 and Ruffus E. Bean in 1900. The grounds were prepared early in the year 1849, and the first lot was transferred by assignment to John S. Jewell on November 9, 1849. These were very valuable pieces of land for a cemetery due to the soil type and the flat terrain, plus its location making it very serene resting place.
At the annual meeting of this association, held May 2, 1925, a finance committee, ( known as “Trustees of Trust Funds”), of three persons was elected “Whose duty it shall be to receive and hold such funds as shall be given the Association in trust, the income of such funds as shall be given the Association in trust, the income of such funds to be used for perpetual care of lots, or the general improvement of the cemetery”.
The present Cemetery Association was incorporated May 3, 1930, creating the Board of Trustees to oversee the cemetery, listing the various offices and setting up the original rules and regulations. Anyone with a burial plot is a share-holder.
A More detailed history of this cemetery can be found in “The History of Franklin, NH by Albert Garneau”.
